The Wanderment Creative Jam

Something is leaking through. Bits of another universe are showing up around SJSU and downtown San Jose. Most people can’t see them. Spend a weekend with a team inventing one of these Intrusions and putting it into the real world in augmented reality, where anyone with a phone can walk up and find it.

Event Overview

  • When: Oct 23–25 (Friday night through Sunday afternoon)
  • Where: MLK Jr. Library (Exact room TBA; register to get updates)
  • Cost: Free, open to all
  • Food: Pizza, snacks, and drinks on us!
  • Teams: 3–7 people (Come solo or bring your people)
  • Requirements: Bring a phone (iOS or Android) and a charger. No coding required!

What You’ll Make

An Intrusion is a small piece of another world that slipped into this one: a creature, an object, a sound, a scene. It’s an early sign of the bigger rupture coming in The Wanderment, an AR story set in downtown San Jose. What leaked through, and whether it followed Vera (the woman who vanished through a rift), is up to your team.

No Coding. Really.

You’ll build with Membit, a free, no-code AR app. If you can use a phone, you can build an Intrusion. 3D modeling, illustration, animation, video, sound, and writing skills all help, but none are required. Teams also need storytellers, performers, location scouts, and people who can pitch and promote.

Who Can Come

Anyone! You don’t need to be an SJSU student, or a student at all. Artists, designers, filmmakers, performers, musicians, writers, coders, and the curious are all welcome. The best Intrusions will come from mixed teams.

The Schedule

Early-Bird Track

  • KLEVR Lab: Tue Oct 6 & 13 (4:00–5:30 PM) OR Wed Oct 7 & 14 (6:00–8:00 PM)
  • Drop in, no sign-up or commitment needed. Learn more before deciding. 3D modelers get the technical details for adapting existing work to AR, plus ideas for this project.

Friday, Oct 23

  • 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Optional, in the SJSU Art Building)
  • Get the story, place your first piece in Membit, and build Campbellian headgear. Pizza included!

Saturday, Oct 24

  • 9:00 AM kickoff, build until 6:00 PM
  • Form teams, then join short workshops on Membit, 3D, 2D art, video, sound, and scouting. Build until close.

Sunday, Oct 25

  • Finish anywhere in the morning, back at 1:00 PM
  • Final touches at the library. At 3:00 PM, building stops and the Intrusion Tour begins. Wraps up around 4:30 PM.

What You’ll Learn & Walk Away With

Leave with a live, public piece for your portfolio, plus skills in:

  • Spatial Storytelling: Telling a story through a real place, where location, movement, and discovery do the work that scenes and cuts do on a screen.
  • 3D Experience Design: Designing something people walk up to and around—scale, sightlines, how they approach it, and what they notice first.
  • AR Creation: Making and placing 3D models, images, video, and sound in the real world with Membit, and getting them to hold their spot.

Special Highlights

The Campbellians Are Coming

Time travelers from the future who study the multiverse, and they’ll notice. On the tour, volunteers dress as Campbellians (robes, soup cans strapped to foreheads) to inspect every Intrusion. Everyone else films it, playing it straight: who are these people staring at things that aren’t there?

The Golden Soup Can

Everyone votes, and the winning team takes home the trophy! The best Intrusions can become official, credited parts of The Wanderment if their makers want them to. You keep ownership of what you make.
